Answers & Solutions

The answers given below are the ans. accepted by the examiners on the basis of what was written. Most of these were not predetermined, & allowances have been made for the use of logic & reasoning:


Q1. What is the ideal shape for a space settlement? Explain with reasons.
Ans. Torus/Toroid/Ring, Ellipse/Ellipsoid, Sphere, Cylinder, because the pseudo-gravity will be uniform along    the surface. Also they have a good volume/area ratio.

Q2. What are the effects of micro-g on human body? How will u induce gravity?
Ans. Muscles & bones weaken, circulation affected, height increases, head swells up.
        Gravity can be induced by rotating settlement & centrifugal accn. will act outwards.

Q3. What are the possible hazards for a space settlement?
Ans. Asteroids, space junk, radiation.

Q4. Suggest systems of computing.....
Ans. Ideal ans.-Cloud Computing, Quantum Computing
        But given ans. like nanoech, carbon nanotubes accepted

Q5.  If space sett. is around Mars, where to get resources?
Ans. Mars, Phobos, Deimos, Asteroids(give details of what resources from where)

Q6.  How to induce Earth-like conditions?
Ans. Day-night cycle, climate cycles(seasons), recreation, flora & fauna.

Q7.  Before the ISS there was Mir which held the record.

Q8.  Why don't metallic objects stick to ground due to magnetic field of earth?
Ans. Field intensity & strength too less. Strength= 30-60microtesla.

Q9.  What would happen to Earth if the Sun was to disappear at this moment?
Ans.  There would be no change for 8 mins. 17 secs. as information travels at speed of light. After this Earth   would move off at a tangent to its orbit.

Q10. Sequence ques.
Ans. 96 . The logic was that 10 is largest no. with 3 letters in name, 9 is largest with 4 letters in name & so on.
Q11. Describe LHC experiment & .....
Ans. Protons projected at 99.97% speed of light & made to collide in search of Higgs Boson, the particle thought to give matter property of mass.

Ans. Transforming the conditons on a planet to mimic Earth, to enable colonisation.

Ans. Shoemaker Levy 9 crashed into Jupiter, damaging areas the size of Earth.

Ans. Always accelerating, but if tangential accn., then eccentricity of orbit increases.

Q21. What is gravity? Y do planets revolve?
Ans. Warping of spacetime continuum, due to presence of mass. Revolution due to  planet trying to escape the Sun's gravity well.

Q22. Spacewalk.
Ans. Action-Reaction principle applies on connection with spacecraft(push or pull rope) & pushing or pulling parts of spacecraft.

selection process done by the school is slightly different from the usual competition.you will be judged
on your aptitude to be a professional engineer , doctor , scientist , researcher , manager , accountant , architect etc.
i do not feel any preparations are necessary to attempt the 1st round of the selection procedure.
considered to be world's toughest sr. sec team competition , renders a true aerospace environment.
we do require some excellent designers and artists since it is a design competition.
all those who wish to enhance their chances of qualifying into the competition may learn some basics of
designing using softwares like blender , 3ds max or maya. (personally blender would be a good option as
its system req. are basic ) get urself an ebook "blender for dummies" (you can download blender for free !)

ARSSDC selection process

Just as in industry, competing teams submit designs in response to a Request for Proposal (RFP), which describes exactly what the customer wants to see in the design.
Qualifying Competition teams may be of any size (from a few to many dozen). The 12 teams that qualify for the Finalist Competition will be limited to 12 high school students each, with two adult advisors. Teams are advised to select members with diverse experiences and/or interests; successful designs balance structural integrity, operating efficiency, use of computers and robotics, and pleasant living conditions. Prior Competitions have shown that it will also be helpful to have at least one good artist and/or one good writer on your team.
The 12 Finalist teams will be informed by e-mail. The Finalist teams are responsible for arranging their own round trip transportation to Nassau Bay, Texas, near NASA Johnson Space Center. Lodging and meals will be complimentary during the Finalist Competition for each team's twelve students and two advisors.
Competition organizers and sponsoring organizations retain rights to publish or otherwise use any materials prepared in connection with this Competition.

The Competition

This competition takes place in a simulated future year (see the RFP for exact dates). Technological advancements beyond the current state of the art have accrued. The contents of these links describe technologies the judges will accept in your design. Any other technologies assumed in your design must be fully justified (for example, if you plan to use `warp drive', you must explain how it is constructed).
The basic products, vehicles, and structures described for this competition are technically possible within the timeframes indicated. They do, however, represent ambitious technical, economic, and political commitments. Some will never happen, some will. Some are projects that Design Competition participants who become engineers will work on during their careers. The company Northdonning Heedwell, including its product line and history, is based on a composite of real corporations, projected into the future. There is no such organization as the Foundation Society. The described efforts by the Foundation Society to foster commercial space infrastructure development could, however, be accomplished by other existing organizations.
Your proposal will be judged by engineers from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Orange County (California) Section. They have experience in the aerospace industry and are familiar with the current state of the art, so please base your design on reasonable interpretations of the level of existing technology defined here, the laws of Physics, and common sense.
